For forty-two years, Oba Aromolaran II occupied the ancient throne of the Owa Obokun. Yet his influence reached far beyond the palace. He was an economist, educator, prolific author and publisher whose books helped generations of West African students understand economics and government. His reign stood at the meeting point of tradition and modern learning.

Pioneer scholar-monarch
He was the first Nigerian monarch to hold a PhD. His doctorate in Economics made him a pioneering scholar-monarch and a powerful symbol of education as public service.

Through Aromolaran Publishing Company and an extensive body of educational works, including Economics for West Africa, he helped shape classroom learning across Nigeria, Ghana and beyond.

Born on 13 October to Oba Iluyomade Aromolaran I and Princess Tinuola Aromolaran.

Higher education and public service
Earned a BSc in Economics from the University of Ibadan and a graduate diploma in Public Administration from the University of Ife, later Obafemi Awolowo University.
1966 onward
Writing for a generation
His educational books in economics and government became familiar texts for secondary and advanced-level students across West Africa.
1971
A publishing enterprise
Left the civil service and established Aromolaran Publishing Company Limited in Ibadan, developing a catalogue reported to encompass more than one hundred educational titles.

Ascended the throne
Became Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, succeeding Oba Peter Adeniran Olatunji Agunlejika II.
2002 onward
Chancellor and national figure
Served as a university chancellor and received honours including Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).
2024
A completed reign, an enduring example
Joined his ancestors on 11 September after a 42-year reign; his passing was publicly announced the following day. Tributes remembered his learning, courage, fairness and devotion to Ijesaland.
